An Integrated Model of Care
Wunan Health & Well-Being Centre is an Aboriginal-owned and operated health service based in Kununurra, Western Australia, and is a social enterprise of the Wunan Foundation. It provides integrated, culturally safe healthcare and wellbeing services for people across the East Kimberley. Established as a private GP practice in 2013 (formerly Kununurra Medical), Wunan Health has grown into a multidisciplinary organisation delivering primary healthcare alongside mental health, allied health, disability advocacy and alcohol and other drug services.
Our team of dedicated and experienced primary healthcare professionals provide high-quality services to the local community and to the many visitors to our magnificent region. Conveniently located in the town centre of Kununurra in a brand new purpose-built facility, Wunan Health & Well-Being Centre is proudly owned and operated by Wunan Foundation, an East Kimberley Aboriginal development organisation. Profits generated through the GP clinic are reinvested into the Wunan Foundation’s community programs, supporting broader social and economic outcomes for Aboriginal people.
Proudly AGPAL accredited, the Wunan Health & Well-Being Centre, opened its new doors in September 2020 and was built with the generous support of Lotterywest. We are co-located with the Rural Clinical School.
GP Clinic
The Wunan Health & Well-Being Centre is the only accredited private GP practice in the East Kimberley, serving residents of Kununurra, surrounding communities and visitors to the region. Located at 57 Bandicoot Drive, the purpose-built facility offers comprehensive, multidisciplinary primary healthcare in a culturally safe environment.
Allied Health Services
Wunan Health has recently expanded its services through its Integrated Care and Allied Health Program, designed to improve access to coordinated care for people living with chronic and complex health conditions throughout the East Kimberley. The program focuses on prevention, early intervention, self-management and improving quality of life through multidisciplinary care. Eligible patients can access these services through referrals from a GP Care Plan, Mental Health Treatment Plan or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Assessment, with funding provided through WA Primary Health Network until at least February 2027.
Independent Advocacy Program
Wunan Health’s Independent Advocacy Program helps people with disability, chronic health conditions and other complex needs to understand their rights, access services and overcome barriers to care. Rather than providing clinical treatment, advocates work alongside individuals to:
- Navigate health, disability and community service systems
- Access appropriate supports and entitlements
- Promote self-determination and informed decision-making
- Increase community participation and independence
- Support communication with service providers and government agencies.
The advocacy service complements Wunan Health’s clinical programs by addressing the social and practical factors that influence health and wellbeing.
Kununurra Withdrawal Intervention Centre (KWIC)
The Kununurra Withdrawal Intervention Centre (KWIC) is a specialist alcohol and other drug withdrawal service operated by Wunan Health. It is described as the first Aboriginal community-controlled low medical withdrawal service of its kind in Kununurra. The service aims to reduce harm associated with substance use while supporting long-term recovery through coordinated, community-based care.
headspace Kununurra
Wunan Health also operates headspace Kununurra, providing free and confidential support for young people aged 12–25 years using a “No Wrong Door” approach. The service recognises that young people often need support across multiple areas of life and works collaboratively with families, schools, health providers and community organisations.
An integrated model of care
Together, these services create an integrated model that addresses the physical, mental, social and cultural determinants of health. Rather than operating as separate programs, the GP clinic, Allied Health team, Independent Advocacy Program, KWIC and headspace Kununurra work collaboratively to ensure people can move between services according to their needs. This coordinated approach reflects Wunan Health’s commitment to delivering holistic, culturally safe healthcare that supports healthier individuals, stronger families and more resilient communities across the East Kimberley.
