Community Ambassador (Halls Creek)

The overall purpose of this role is to assist individuals with disabilities and families in the region with support in tackling place based and systemic issues. They will be a highly motivated and capable person who will contribute to key meetings and make representation with and on behalf of the client.

Wunan Foundation is a leading Aboriginal development organisation based in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Its purpose is to ensure that Aboriginal people enjoy the capabilities and opportunities necessary to make positive choices that lead to independent, fulfilling lives.

Wunan delivers the Community Ambassador Program in Kalumburu and Wyndham and are looking for a Halls Creek member to join the team.

Wunan is seeking a Community Ambassador to help improve access to NDIS, assist with planning, link to other disability services, assist with Telehealth access and refer to other key stakeholders. Helping people reach their end goals and make the most from services available – not letting people “fall through the cracks”.

Key Duties

Assist people to test for NDIS eligibility – including support letter collection, gathering ID and helping create and attend doctor appointments
Assist approved NDIS participants with planning and support coordination
Connect participants access Telehealth and work with therapists to assist families with offline therapy exercises
Attend meetings, book appointments and make representation with and on behalf of the client, part will also call for a more systemic review and mapping of trends and gaps in service provision across the region
Maintain professional boundaries and manage perceive potential and actual conflict of interest and risk mitigation strategies, inclusive of strong problem solving skills
Negotiate verbally and in writing on behalf of clients, including people experiencing cognitive disabilities or speech difficulties, and their family members / supports
Network with key community and government agencies
Work in a culturally safe manner with indigenous Australians and in remote Kimberley communities
Work with the broader Wunan Health and Wunan team in the improvement of services to disability clients in the region

Requirements of the role

Essential Criteria:

Experience supporting or advocating for clients on a one to one basis in a paid or voluntary capacity and be able to demonstrate this.
An understanding of the wellbeing needs and aspirations of people with or caring for people with disability.
Experience in delivering support programs to clients and appropriately linking them to relevant services
Experience in leading, supporting and guiding others to complete set tasks and reach program objectives.
Good written and verbal skills with the ability to build effective and trusting relationships with people internally and externally
Demonstrated ability to work with an appropriate level of discretion, confidentiality, tactfulness, and professionalism
Commitment to Wunan Foundation’s vision, values and mission
A demonstrated commitment to the core mission of Wunan
National Police Check
Up to date COVID-19 vaccination
Australian Drivers Licence

Desirable criteria:

Qualification and/or experience in Social Work or Advocacy.
Experience working in community service organisation/s.
A strong understanding of Indigenous people in general, and of Indigenous people and communities in particular in the East Kimberley
Proficient computing skill to allow for clear record keep and communicating

Wunan delivers the Disability Advocacy Program in the East Kimberley, and is seeking 2x Disability Advocacy Officer part-time positions based in Kununurra and Halls Creek to help link people with disabilities or caring for people with disabilities to existing services. Advocate is confident to communicate with various stakeholders at different leadership levels

Negotiate verbally and in writing on behalf of clients, including people experiencing cognitive disabilities or speech difficulties, and their family members / supports
Network with key community and government agencies
Assist in the development of systems and processes to gather, analyse and inform our program outcomes.
Work in a culturally safe manner with indigenous Australians and in remote Kimberley communities
Assist in the completion of program reporting in a timely and consistent manner
Work with the broader Wunan Health and Wunan team in the improvement of services to disability clients in the region

Requirements of the role
